Study on anxiolytic effects of Tiaofo compound essential oil via aromatherapy in mice
Abstract
ObjectiveTo prepare a compound essential oil for aromatherapy using sweet orange oil and bergamot oil,and to evaluate its anxiolytic effects in mice.MethodsA compound essential oil was prepared by mixing sweet orange oil and bergamot oil.Two effective formulations(Compound Type Ⅰ and Compound Type Ⅱ) were selected through preliminary screening for volatilization uniformity and aroma.Specific pathogen‑free(SPF) male ICR mice were divided into a blank group,a lavender group(positive control),a bergamot group (single‑oil control),a Compound Type Ⅰ group, and a Compound Type Ⅱ group.Aromatherapy inhalation was used as the intervention, and anxiolytic effects were assessed by the open field test and the elevated plus‑maze test.ResultsCompared with the blank group, mice in both Compound Type Ⅰ and Compound Type Ⅱ groups showed increased exploratory behavior in the central area of the open field(P<0.05),significantly prolonged time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus⁃maze(P<0.05).And reduced time spent in the closed arms (P<0.05).These effects were similar to those of lavender essential oil,and the values of each index showed a tendency to be superior to the bergamot single essential oil group.ConclusionsThe combination of sweet orange and bergamot essential oils exerts anxiolytic effects. The superior efficacy of the compound formulation over bergamot oil alone may be attributed to functional complementarity between d⁃limonene and linalyl acetate in olfactory transduction and GABAergic pathways.
