Ultrafast laser inducing bulging and nanograin refinement dynamics of polycrystalline nanospikes
Abstract
Using a hybrid framework that couples the two temperature model parameterized by ab initio optoelectronic data with classical molecular dynamics, we uncover the atomistic mechanisms governing the evolution of Zr polycrystalline nanospikes under an ultrafast pulse. The analysis of the irradiated nanostructures reveals two dominant phenomena near the melting threshold: (i) a shape-morphology transition, evidenced by a bulgingnecking profile at the nanospike apex, characteristic of a capillary-driven viscous flow, and (ii) a significant nanograin refinement, driven by the deep undercooling state achieved through localized rapid melting-cooling.
