Herschel-Quincke filter-inspired periodic structures for suppression of dilation and torsional waves in elastic rods and shafts

Abstract

This paper investigates wave propagation in straight rods and shafts incorporating periodic Herschel-Quincke (HQ) inserts. Elementary mathematical models employing the plane cross-sections kinematic hypothesis (in the former case, for dilation waves, and, in the later one, for shear waves) are used to obtain equations defining zero transmission frequencies and frequencies separating pass- and stop- bands in an explicit analytical form. Intrinsic link between these frequencies is demonstrated as well as their link with eigenfrequencies of a single HQ filter inserted in an infinite waveguide. The trapped mode case occurring when constituents of the HQ filter have identical mechanical properties is demonstrated and explained. Combining periodicity and HQ filtering effects is shown to be a promising tool for tailoring vibro-isolation properties of waveguides. Reported results and their interpretation should facilitate the design of vibroacoustic meta-materials and the understanding of their performance.
