An obstruction to cosmic acceleration from shift-symmetric dark sector interactions
Abstract
Using the effective field theory of cosmological media, we show that derivative interactions in the dark sector between a perfect fluid and a superfluid cannot support slow-roll expansion while remaining free from instabilities. Furthermore, decomposing the dark sector medium into effective dark matter and dark energy components, we find that the stability conditions exclude a phantom-to-non-phantom crossing. Our approach gives a clear route for constructing theoretically viable dark sector models, and highlights the fundamental constraints that stability requirements impose on their cosmological dynamics.
