Abstract

Purpose

Reconstructing auricular defects is clinically challenging. Hence auricular prosthetics provide a practical and reliable alternative. The aim of this study was to provide a retrospective evaluation of prosthetic rehabilitation, clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction of auricular prosthetic service over an 11-years period.Materials and methods

This study involved a retrospective review of records from 24 patients who received auricular prostheses between May 2013 and May 2024. Data included patient demographics, etiology of defects, type of retention, implant success, soft tissue response, adhesive performance, and prosthesis longevity. Quality of life (QoL) was assessed using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and percentages were calculated, and chi-square test was applied to determine statistical significance at P < .05.Results

A total of 29 prostheses were provided to 24 patients (20 males, 4 females, mean age 18.17 ± 9.68 years). Implant retention (58%) was used only in congenital cases; adhesive retention (42%) was used in all acquired and some congenital cases. Implant survival was 97% with 35.8% showing no soft tissue irritation. Adhesive users reported margin tearing (50%) and reliability issues (70%). Two-thirds of patients required prosthesis replacement due to discoloration (75%) or facial growth (50%) (P < .001). Overall, 62% strongly agreed their prosthesis improved their social interaction, self-image, and esthetics (P = .002).Conclusion

Implant- and adhesive-retained auricular prostheses are valuable treatment option for congenital and acquired ear defects enhancing patients' quality of life. They need frequent replacement due to changes in fit and color.
