Correlated TEM, EELS and Photoluminescence Study of MoO₃ and Mo₄O₁₁ Phases Obtained by Close Space Vapor Transport
Abstract
A correlated structural and optical study of orthorhombic α-MoO₃ and reduced Mo₄O₁₁ phases obtained by close space vapor transport is presented. Both phases were formed within the same growth experiment but in spatially separated regions, enabling direct comparison under identical synthesis conditions. Electron microscopy reveals distinct morphologies, with platelet-like MoO₃ and porous hillock Mo₄O₁₁ structures. TEM and SAED confirm the crystalline nature and local structural heterogeneity of the reduced phase. Low-loss EELS measurements yield band gap values of 3.33-3.65 eV for MoO₃ and 3.18-3.37 eV for Mo₄O₁₁. Despite this difference, room-temperature photoluminescence shows similar near-band-gap emissions, suggesting comparable effective recombination energies. A sharp emission at ~2.6 eV is observed exclusively in Mo₄ O₁₁ and is attributed to localized defect-related states associated with oxygen deficiency. These results highlight the role of ordered vacancies and structural heterogeneity in shaping the electronic structure of molybdenum oxide phases.
