Abstract
Red phosphorus (RP) has gained considerable attention owing to its high chemical stability and narrow band gap, making it a promising material for applications in photocatalysis, energy storage, and related areas. Covalent functionalization has emerged as an effective approach to enhance the surface reactivity, dispersibility, and chemical stability of nanomaterials. Herein, we report covalently modified RP nanosheets prepared using aryl diazonium molecules as organic ligands. The functionalized RP nanosheets (f-RPNS) exhibit better colloidal stability and dispersibility compared to pristine RP nanosheets. The in vitro antibiofilm studies of f-RPNS, with and without NIR irradiation, demonstrated that the covalently modified RPNS can eradicate drug-resistant bacterial biofilms even in the absence of photothermal treatment. We highlight the potential of f-RPNS across various biomedical fields, particularly in biofilm eradication.
