Spectral properties of orthorhombic KSbOSiO4 crystals: studies of infrared, visible and ultraviolet radiation absorption, Raman scattering, cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence
Abstract
Crystals of orthorhombic KSbOSiO4 (KSS) are often found to synthesize in glass of historical and artistic articles. For instance, these crystallites in the glass of turquoise Bohemian seed beads are known to play a significant role in the process of internal-stress driven corrosion of the glass causing deterioration and destruction of bead embroidered museum exhibits, especially articles made in the early 19th century. In art materials science, KSS has been known since the mid-2010s only for its destructive effects on historical glass objects, but as an optical material it has long been studied. KSS belongs to the group of compounds isomorphic to KTiOPO4 (KTP) and, like other compounds from this group, has anomalies in dielectric constant. The article presents the results of a study of orthorhombic KSS crystals using a number of spectroscopic techniques. IR absorption and diffuse reflection spectra of KSS in the spectral range from 50 to 4000~cm−1, its Raman spectrum, its absorption spectrum in the range from near infrared to ultraviolet as well as its cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence spectra are investigated. The constituent peaks of the spectral bands are analyzed and their properties are summarized in tables; the allowed direct and indirect band gaps of KSS are determined. The presented data are necessary both for the correct spectral analysis of historical and artistic glass and enamels, during the production of which this substance was sometimes synthesized in glass, and for a more in-depth study of crystals of the KTP group.
